Paper Shoes
This project introduces the user-centered design through a three-dimensional approach of material prototyping. The design challenge asks you to design footwear for another person using only paper and glue. During the course of this project, you will work within the frameworks of user-centered qualitative research, as well as refined prototyping.
Design Challenge:
Catelyne needs boots that can help supporting her flat feet,
wants gothic style that is able to present all aspect of her characteristics,
so that she feels well-fitted & looks mature in her own way when wearing them

OUTCOME CONCEPT
My user Catelyne wants a pair of Gothic high-thigh boot that is able to present all the aspects of her characteristics and desires while supporting her flat feet. The insole is the soul of this pair of boots. In order to resolve the problem of Cat’s flat feet, I seek for the pre-exist solution. I also managed to add flexibility, softness, and the quality of absorbent by using Bounty tissue paper ( I was originally planning to use sanitary napkins, but it’s not completely made out of paper). In contrast to that, I create a rather solid sole/base because I remembered during the interview, Cat told me that she feels pain when she walk/stand too long. I decided to go with different design for each boot because when I was doing the research, I noticed that the idol girl team (AKB 48) though contains different aspects to their unique personalities, but they still cooperate very well together. On the other hand, the more I talk to/hang out with Cat, I discovered a lot more about her profile that other people may not notice, and I want “Neko Same” (the boots) to reflect that. Thus, I put many details into decoration so each time when people see it, they discover something new about it. I took inspiration from Gothic clothing and “Spirited Away” by Studio Ghibili as well. The movie “Spirited Away” consists various creatures/ gods, which is where I gain inspiration of the name “Neko Sama (The God of Cat)”. Meanwhile, the Gothic elements provide an elegant, mature flavor to the design, which balance out the characteristic and creates a new kind of personality. |
