Machine As Cultural Artifacts Project
Golden Lantern 2540 F7 - Prototype
A prototype of "future machine" created using a broken hair dryer. Functioned as a multi-tasking scale-flexible (approximately 1.25mm^3 X 1.04X10^-26 to 5" X 3" X 3.5" inches) medical helper which will benefit millions of races throughout the universe. This machine is given the name "Golden Lantern" because its appearance resembles both a golden fish and a lantern fish. The shape suggests one of its function as to be moveable - swim in one's body and proceed the healing process without an open surgery. This machine is omnipotent (if it is actually being invented) in the medical field (of future society): capable in changing sizes, detect disease, inject medicine, and even operated surgery.
This, of course, sounds to good to be true; however, it is the wish and hope that carry this kind of idea into reality in the future that motivate mankind to move forward. As the title indicates: The light to our future. Through the process of taking one thing apart and recreate a new feature, new ideas often come to shape during this creative moment. Sometimes a design is hard to understand its function just by interpreted its shape. And sometimes, the meaning/purpose given by the creator/maker/artist is lost or wasn't given the opportunity to express to other. Therefore, I am lucky to have the chance explain my concept of this project and receive feedback from my audience as well.

Sense of Place
cARTography Project
This map incorporate the experinence of vision, sound, smell, taste, texture, and emotion to a place. To start, the color tone is the reflection of the season. The place I went to is a community garden/park which consists sereral different elements, but mostly, nature. During this time of the season, rain is part of the everyday life. Not only dose it caused the soil to be muddy, but also speed up the decomposition of the organic materials. I am aiming to achieve the muddiness through the choice of the color base. On the other hand, various representation of paths and roads are used in this map. The dark brown roadway I created with masking tape is to resemble the brances, the leaf vein, as well as the spider web which I encountered a lot in the park. The other paths are the representation of other aspects of senses. The 3D element I brought into the map is to create a centrol focus of the map, which stands for my issue with horrible sense of direction. The coordinate in the center of the structure is quite unstable and very misleading. The white line it connects with is the sturggle I had to went through in order to get to my final destination. The building-like structure is to represent a children's playground. It is poorly constructed (kind of like kids-made secret fortress). The white orangish spheric structure stands for the dreamy bubble of childhood, and the deflated ballon is the unpleasent reality. |
While a map is usually functioned as to direct an orientation, this map, in particular, is laying out through the perspection of a body wondered in the street, and a mind lost in memories. The purpose of this map is to encourage people who are also struggled with their horrible sense of direction to step out to an unfamilar place and get lost. Because each of the experience of getting lost will be an extraordinary advanture.
